About Me

Scott A. Clark has really strange dreams that sometimes become novels. His first completed manuscript earned him Twin Tales Publishing's 2022 Indie Author of the Year award. Before becoming an author, Scott got a degree in meteorology, was a professional rock bassist, and took up ice hockey, while maintaining a career in technology. Originally from Northern Virginia, he, his wife, and their daughter now call Tennessee home.

Fun fact: Scott fits easily into most overhead storage compartments.

Awards and Accolades

  • Reviews

    • "I was particularly impressed with the author’s Tolkien-like effort to paint with words. This book is best read at a leisurely pace, to better absorb the visuals and other sensual descriptors." --Jeffe Boats, author of the upcoming Burn Card.
    • "Very well written with a unique story line which is not something you find these days. From start to finish it was an engaging read with a great pace. It’s a proper page turner. All the characters developed into full people as the story progressed and they were all believable and consistent."
    • "Very intelligent writing and entertaining, well-rounded characters draw the reader into a world that is both very real and slightly fantastic at the same time."

FAQ (Fictionally Asked Questions)

  • Why did you start writing?

I had never really aspired to be an author, but I have always been a dreamer, literally. My debut novel, the first in The HER VIOLET EMPIRE Series, started from a vivid dream I had years ago and I've been developing it ever since. About halfway through writing it, my mother and I talked about writing in general, and decided to tell her stories. SUSIE'S ADVENTURES started as 1-2 page blurbs for Mom to tell at family gatherings, but it quickly grew. Those stories will find their place soon.

  • Who are your influences?

    • My biggest writing influence has always been, and probably will always be Douglas Adams. I read The Hitchhiker's Guide when I was in 4th grade and, although many of the jokes were way over my head, I laughed my little head off. His gift for understatement and sentences that suddenly veer left and go on holiday for the weekend have not only influenced my writing, but my modes of speech.
    • I also love the fearlessness and wit of Christopher Moore. Fool is probably my second-most reread book behind H2G2. In addition to the magnificent bawdiness, his stories have incredible heart and humanity and keep you guessing throughout, even when you already know the story.
    • John Scalzi is another author I aspire to be when I grow up. The entire Interdependency trilogy, Redshirts, and Old Man's War showed me that science fiction doesn't have to take itself too seriously and that profanity is almost as effective as punctuation, when done correctly. Maureen Abernathy owes a great deal to Kiva Lagos.
    • Lastly, the world-building acumen of the James S.A. Corey team influenced The HER VIOLET EMPIRE Series beyond measure. Character study, attention to detail, scenic realism. They have it all.
  • Are you really a weatherman?

I'm a lifelong learner and have taught myself many skills that I learned just enough of to be average. I picked Meteorology (Atmospheric Science) as my college major, but just as I was graduating, all the jobs dried up. I still love watching the weather, though. Fortuitously, I graduated college just at the beginning of the dot-com boom in the East Coast epicenter. My IT career started with a Teach Yourself C++ book, that's all it took. So no, I'm not really a weatherman, but I like to play one when severe weather comes rolling across Tennessee.

  • You WANTED to be a bass player?

When all the kids my age were shredding air guitar along with the likes of Van Halen, I was playing air bass along with Sir Paul McCartney. I bought my first bass when I was 18 and utterly failed to play it for a year. Naturally, the first song I learned to play was Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. For a time in 2003-04, I found myself playing professionally. I don't just mean I got paid, I mean the band was my only income for a while. We even scored a few opening gigs for The Bret Michaels Band, and a few of my good friends and former bandmates still tour with him. Fun fact: I prefer Spector Basses, and all of my Spectors have been named for Muppet characters.
