Social House Cleaning

Really, it wasn’t how I wanted to start my day.

First of all, let me say how excited I am to be participating in the Pop-Up BookShoppe at GalaxyCon Columbus. To be there with so many famous names and faces, not to mention some other fantastic authors, is a great honor. I’m thrilled to have been invited. Yeah, I still have some COVID ick, and I may end up being there masked most of the time, but it’s really putting me back in the world and out of my comfort zone. I’ve needed that for a while.

But back to starting my day. I’ve been trying to play the game of a content creator for a while, and I’ve been doing okay at it. I’ve gotten way more confident in front of the camera, and am able to do most of my videos in one take. The big problem I’ve been running into is that nobody cares. Before you start mocking me, let me clarify that statement a bit. It’s really not about number of followers or even number of views. People have complained about ONLY getting 200-300 views, when that’s easily four times what I get on Instagram or Facebook.

The problem I have with the accursed clock app is community. There’s definitely a community there, and through various means, I have determined that it is not mine and it will never accept me. I’m not going to speculate on why I was never able to take hold there, but I can say that it was costing me significant mental and emotional energy. The return was nil. I also deactivated Threads, but not for the same reasons. I had tried Twitter before the recent turmoil, and found that there’s really no foothold to gain on a system like that if you’re not already established. It was a yawning void just consuming words, and Threads is ultimately the same. The short-form content model is not useful to me.

I’m still on Facebook and Instagram, so I have not, nor do I plan to give up on Social Media as a whole. I simply needed to clean house and focus on the platforms that made the most sense to me and provide me with the best experience.
