The Maximum Cat

The next step toward getting my book(s) published has been taken and I have officially set up my imprint: Maximum Cat Press!

So what’s with the name? A couple posts ago, I mentioned that I lost a dear friend. My cat, Max, had been with us for more than 13 years and he was more than just a pet. He was my best buddy, my animal avatar, an extension of my personality. I don’t think I could get all the reasons he was awesome into a single blog post. We would often joke about what Max was short for. Maxwell or Maximilian didn’t seem to fit, but the one thing we were sure of is that he was always extra: The Maximum Cat. It seemed a fitting tribute, and then when I designed the logo, it all sort of fell in place. It felt like serendipity. Thanks to DesignEvo for the perfect logo design!

Now, it’s really official. I got my EIN and registered my business with the county. For those that may wonder, Tennessee does not do Fictional Business Names (FBNs) or Doing Business As (DBA), but as a sole proprietor with no appreciable revenue at the moment, the county clerk will issue something called a Minimal Activity Business Tax License. I’m pretty damned far from a tax or legal advisor, but I did email my county clerk’s office and got this directly from them.

With the imprint set, the next step is to assign my ISBNs for Her Violet Empire and start the work of actually publishing. This is a major hurdle cleared and I’m so excited to share my good news. As someone who is easily distracted and tends to walk away from things that are no longer fun, this is a very big accomplishment for me. I can now say that every member of my family of origin is a small business owner, and how many people can say that?
